A Penny For My Thoughts

Beavis Earns His Keep

By Paul Wein

I have had pets all of my life. From dogs to cats to fish to guinea pigs - most of my life has been lived in the company of a pet. And of all the pets I have ever had - Beavis is by far the greatest of them all. Each and every day he proves to me just how lucky I am to have him in my life. But last night, he not only showed me why I love him so much - he earned his keep in a very big way.

I was sitting at my kitchen table surfing the web when I saw him staring at a banner I had on the wall and crying. When I got up to investigate what was wrong - I heard movement behind the banner. After momentarily panicking, I realized that Beavis and I were not alone in the house - because something was alive behind that banner - something big.

After a few seconds of trying to figure out what to do, our guest revealed himself - and sent me into a panic. It turns out that our unwelcome stranger was a giant - and I mean giant flying cockroach that must have gotten into my house when I left a window open - and was now racing across my carpet trying to escape a determined Beavis - who bravely chased the enormous pest as his daddy hid in the kitchen afraid for his life.

For those of you who do not know, those giant flying bugs are by far my absolute worst fear. Nothing in this world terrifies me more then a cockroach that can not only fly - but that is so big that you can actually hear it move. It's bad enough when I see or hear them outside - but to know that one was in my house made me think of taking Beavis and checking into a hotel until it decided to leave on it's own.

Once Beavis cornered the beast, I called my landlord, who was kind enough to come upstairs and kill it. But while I have to thank my landlord for making the save - I really have to thank Beavis for being braver then me - and protecting his daddy at all costs.

Man do I love that cat.
